City College Plymouth, in partnership with Kier, has celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Hard Hat Ready programme. This innovative initiative is transforming lives and supporting the construction industry by addressing workforce needs and promoting social mobility across Plymouth.
Launched in response to the construction sector’s growing demand for skilled workers, the programme equips individuals with vital trade skills and industry certifications.
Key achievements from Hard Hat Ready’s first year include 27 participants successfully completing the programme. Among the graduates, 12 have secured employment, three are awaiting deployment through agencies, two have received job offers, and three are currently on work trials. Additionally, one graduate has progressed to further training, and six refugee students are in the process of completing necessary paperwork to commence their construction careers.
The programme’s free, five-week training includes bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, plumbing, and essential work experience. On completing, students also gain their Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card - a critical credential for employment in the industry.
Jackie Grubb, Chief Executive of City College Plymouth, reflected on the programme’s success: “One year on, the Hard Hat Ready programme has proven to be a transformative initiative, building a skilled workforce for the construction sector while championing social mobility across Plymouth.
“This collaboration with Kier has empowered individuals, including those unemployed or seeking a fresh start, to gain essential trade skills and access meaningful careers. By addressing the skills gap and creating opportunity, we are not only strengthening our community but also fulfilling our commitment to making a lasting difference in people’s lives.”
City College Plymouth and Kier’s ongoing partnership demonstrates a shared vision for addressing skills shortages and empowering individuals to thrive in the construction industry.
