Celebrating Success: Discovery College Supported Internships

Discovery College is celebrating after one of their first cohort of Supported Interns, has successfully gained a paid apprenticeship with a large leisure centre in the city.

A Supported Internship offers 16 to 24-year-olds with an education health care plan (EHCP) the opportunity to work towards an accredited qualification(s) and take part in a work placement opportunity with the support from an expert job coach. This study programme can last between six months to a year, depending on the individual's progress and future plans.

A Supported Internship will:

  • help you to gain skills for your work placement with an employer

  • build your confidence

  • help you gain qualifications such as English and maths

  • build experience for your CV.

Those on the Discovery College programme, like this successful individual, take part in a Sport and Leisure focused Supported Internship, which means that alongside time spent in college where they are supported to complete a Level 1 Certificate in Skills in Employment, Training and Personal Development, they also spend three days a week working in a leisure centre to gain valuable work experience and skills.

We are thrilled to see this developing initiative leading to such great progression outcomes for young people in the city. We wish this Intern every success in their new full-time employment from early June.

Exciting developments ...

Following the success of delivering the Health and Leisure Supported Internship, from September Discovery College will also be offering opportunities within the Hospitality sector.
