Congratulations to William Aspinall, Highly Commended as Building Plymouth Technical Construction Apprentice of the Year 2025!
Will has completed a Level 3 Construction Support Technician apprenticeship with Devon Contractors and Exeter College, going above and beyond to achieve a distinction accreditation.
Will is known for his commitment, proactive approach, and positive impact in the workplace. This is most recently demonstrated by Will's commitment to travelling each day from Exeter to Derriford Retail Park for a project, on which he quickly became a highly valued member of the team.
Will’s work on the social value aspects of the Derriford project was especially commendable. Engaging with local students to achieve social value targets, Will was responsible for organising site tours, mentoring students, and providing insightful talks on careers in construction. His ability to connect with young people, inspire interest, and represent the construction industry in a positive light has contributed greatly to the success of community outreach efforts.
Nigel Whelan, Managing Director of Devon Contractors said: “As a vital member of our Plymouth team, Will has excelled in building strong relationships, not only with colleagues and clients, but also with our supply chain partners, local schools, and the Building Plymouth initiative.”
During his apprenticeship, Will consistently pushed himself out of his comfort zone, taking on responsibilities that challenged him, and developing leadership skills well beyond his years. He supported senior team members, whilst stepping up into leadership roles when required. He proved that he is ready for senior roles that arise in the future.
Safety was an enormous part of Will’s working environment. During his apprenticeship, he completed his SMSTS, FAAW, CSCS, Asbestos Awareness, and more! He worked extremely closely with the Health and Safety Manager, which allowed him to evolve and obtain a broader understanding of the need for a truly safe working environment.
Will supported senior managers with supply chain and design coordination. This included weekly and fortnightly meetings, giving him the chance to have more accountability. As Will’s apprenticeship progressed, his ability to take on extra responsibility was evident.
Nigel added, “All in all, Will’s communication skills and personable manner have meant that he has excelled in all aspects of his apprenticeship both practically and theoretically.”
Will also took part in previous BPART (Building Plymouth Aspiring Rising Talent) events and forums, where he was able to show BPART members around his site at Derriford Retail Park. His active participation and proactive attitude reflect his dedication to learning and growing within the industry.
With his positive attitude to work, and willingness to go above and beyond, it is not hard to see why Will has been Highly Commended for this award.
Upon receiving the award, Will said “I am really pleased to have won this award and want to thank Devon Contractors in particular for all of the opportunities that they have given me to lead things on my own and take part in activities that bring extra value to my apprenticeship. I have really enjoyed working with Building Plymouth and getting involved in BPART (Building Plymouth Aspiring Rising Talent) network. I was able to host a visit for my peers which is something that I never thought I would have been able to do before starting on my apprenticeship.”
